Day 3
Had a long lie today, 7.15am! Got up and had breakfast and packed our bags for our two night safari trip! Our 4wd cars arrived at 8.30 so we got in and headed off on another 8 hour drive to the Serengeti feeling sleepy but excited! Our driver is called dan, and he knows everything there is to know! He never missed a trick. On the way there, we were driving along the edge of the ncorongoro crater, which was scary! We came to a clearing where we could see the whole crater which is almost 20km in diameter and 60 meters high or something, so it was pretty impressive. A little bit further on we stopped to have a picnic lunch at a place where there are some storks, eagles and bats kicking about. The storks are so ugly and kept trying to steal our food! A little further along again we came across a Masai village. They said if we paid them they would give us a tour of the village. So we each paid 5 pounds and headed in. They welcomed us by doing a traditional dance and song thing, like you see on tv, which to be honest I found pretty scary! They invited us in to the center layer of the village which is a sort of performance area where they hold the ceremonies and stuff. They had us all dance with them, which was awkward and embarrassing mostly. Michael got to jump with a masai man which is part of their dance, and they jump really high, but Michael did well, jumping almost as high! I thought I was recording but didn't push the button hard enough so didn't get any of it on camera :(. We were then taken into the masai houses. They are made from sticks, mud, and cow dung - lovely! They are very very small and dark and hot. They sleep six people and are smaller than my room at home. Each house makes jewellery and crafts to sell and make money, so I bought two bracelets as a thank you for showing us their home. There are 120 people in this village, and lots of young children. So they have built a small school where one of the masai men teach the children. So we were taken to the school to visit the kids. They were so sweet and they wanted us to take their picture and show them (just like wee lewis :P)
We got back in the car and eventually came to the Serengeti entrance. Within a couple of minutes of driving we saw a couple of ostriches and a giraffe eating from a tree. We had two hours of game driving and we saw a hyena, lots of zebras, buffalow, hippos, impala, gazelles, and lots of birds, and loads more that I cant remember! We got to our camp, which was already set up for us, had dinner, and were in bed before 9pm! We were exhausted!
