Day 1
Hey guys! Gonna have to back track here since we have had no internet in the past week!
So we arrived in Nairobi airport at 6am on the thursday after leaving on tuesday night, so we were really tired! We still had to get our visas so we filled out the application, headed to the desk and were charged $50 for our one day stay. After waiting for our bags for a while we attempted to barter with a taxi driver but since we were so tired we just went with the $20 he wanted to tak us to our hotele. It turned out to be an hours drive which made the price seem a bit more reasonable. During the drive we got to see alot of Nairobi, which is a bit scary to say the least. at 7am there were hundreds of people out walking the streets, all heading in the exat same direction, searching for work. there were lots of others setting up market stalls and other things to make some money. We were told that all of the people walkign were hoping to find casual construction work for the day, but that very few of them will get any. It was very sad and also very creepy haha, it reminded us of a zombie movie.
When we arrived at the hotel we were pleasantly surprised after the bad reviews it had got. Our room had a living area, double bedroom and ensuite and seperate shower room, with a tv and room service. cant complain! After all the travelling we went straight to bed! We set an alarm for 1pm so we could get up and do something useful with our day in Nairobi. So we got up and ready and headed to the hotel restaurant for lunch which was really really good! We then organised a taxi guide to take us to the giraffe center. It was about an hour away and the taxi guide knew everything there was to know about Nairobi and showed us all the sights on the way. The giraffe center has some endangered giraffes that you can handfeed from a viewing platform. When the giraffes come over they are at the same height as the platform, so you can stand face to face. When we went there were three giraffes, Laura, Kelly and Jock. Only Kelly came over to be fed. So we were feeding her the pellets of food, which I found absolutely disgusting, touching her big slobbery tongue! But as soon as the guide asked if anyone would like to kiss the giraffe, michael was all up for it. So he put the food pellet between his lips and the giraffe licked it out! It was so disgusting but we laughed alot and Michael is very proud of his photos of him snogging Kelly. The funny thing is, he did it twice to make sure the photo was good enough. I think he just enjoyed it.
After the giraffe center, the taxi guide who had waited on us took us back to the hotel on a different route. He showed us everything else there is to see, including Kibera, the biggest slum in africa. There are 2 million people living in this really small area, it was pretty horrible.
Back at the hotel we had some dinner and a beer then headed to our room for an early night. We were lacking in sleep and had a very early start for our tour the next day, so at 10pm we were in bed!
