Next to the crater there is the Olduvai Gorge left from an ancient river. This is the place that Mary Leaky did her amazing discoveries of fossils and foot prints of all the early hominids, australopithecus (2.5-1.75mya), homohabilis (2-1.2mya), homoerectus (1.5-0.8 mya) and homosapiens (400,000-present). No other site has remains of four hominids. We drove down in the gorge and stood on the site of here discoveries. Each year approximately 500 archeologists dig in the gorge for the summer looking for additional artifacts. Near the gorge was something we heard about the shifting sands from our guide. It was only ½ hour away so what the heck. It tuned out to be fascinating. It was a pile of volcano, magnetized sand that had been blown away from the volcano for 30,000 years and 42 miles. What was amazing is the the sand was blown up the wind facing surface but instead of blowing off in the air, the magnetic force cause it to just run down the other side causing the pile to move at one grain of sand step each time. We then found a serene spot, on at hill overlooking the pastures and adjacent mountains were several Maasai tribes were tending there sheeps, goats or cattle.
