We flew from Johannesburg to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, which meant we covered about 1/3 of Africa. The flight was 4 hours, which gives you some idea of the length of Africa. Kigali is a bustling city with lots of people walking but also many motorcycle taxis that Jim had never seen before. They carry a helmet for the passenger then zip in and out of traffic quite scarily. We were met by our driver, Charles, in a Safari style Land Rover which seemed overkill until we got off the paved roads climbing up to our lodge. He took us to the actual Hotel Rwanda for lunch. Off course it is named different and has been refreshed but you could picture some of the scenes from the movie. Then we were off for a 90 mile, three hour drive up the mountain and then over to the other side. We commented to our driver how clean Kigali was and he explained that once a month everyone in the nation spends a day cleaning up the country. Jim also mistakenly asked what group the driver was a member of Tutsi or Hutu and we learned that is now illegal say which group you are from, everyone is to consider themselves Rwandan, all working together to put the past behind them and make Rwanda one of the best countries in Africa. Everyone seemed happy and energetic. More pictures to follow.
