We arrived in Cambodia last night and were met at the airport by our driver. He showed us to our tuk-tuk for the 15 minute drive to our hotel. Tuk-Tuks here are a motorbike with a trailor on the back that has padded seats, armrests and can seat 4 people. The night had cooled down so our drive in was enjoyable. I was laughing at what everyone at home would think of our transport! Our hotel is on the road in from the airport. It's called Motherhome Inn and is costing us $20 per night. We have a kingsize bed, air-conditioning, room safe, breakfast and Internet provided and a nice pool - better value than hotels back home!
After checking in and getting settled we caught a tuk-tuk to Pub Street and wandered along deciding where to eat. Eventually we settled on one called The Terrace so we could watch the traditional Apsara dancers. We enjoyed a dinner of some local Khmer dishes then wandered around the night market before heading home.
This morning we were collected by our guide, Ratanak Eath, to take us out to Angkor Wat and other temples in the complex. We enjoyed travelling in an air-conditioned car and Ratanak's excellent English. At each temple, Ta Prohm, Bayan and Angkor Wat he showed us through and pointed out many features we would have missed if we didn't have a guide. All of the temples were amazing in different ways - the huge trees overtaking parts of Ta Prohm, the many faces of Buddha in Bayan and the size of Angkor Wat and the intricate stone carvings on every surface. I think one of the things that amazed us most was the roof we saw covering walkways, huge blocks of stone fitting together to form and arched roof. It was often carved on the upper surface - simply amazing.
After a day of temple visits in the oppressive heat we were glad to get back to the hotel and enjoy the pool! No doubt we'll be off to Pub Street again tonight to try some more lovely food.
