Up 6:15 to brilliant sunshine, made sandwiches, ate breakfast and loaded our backpacks to trek to Quintin Lodge. Passing a lake called The Mirror, then higher up Lake Mintaro and then on up the Mackinnons Pass, at his Memorial you get stunning views both side of the pass and we were blessed with cloudless clear blue skies (Kea are a cheeky green bird like a parrot as one entertained us the other tried to pinch GA's bobble hat) and up to the peak to Pass Hutt for sandwiches and hot drink. The descent is tough but very scenic, with alpine glacial fed streams and cascading waterfalls, we drop our backpacks at the lodge then a 1.5 hour round trip to Sutherland Falls, fifth highest in the world 1904ft and the noise deafened you as well as the spray stung you, an amazing sight. Ribeye steak (these lodges are very remote all supplies delivered by helicopter) yum yum this trekking lark is tough, off to bed for an early start in the morning. John & Gail
