After our day in Singapore the rest of our stay in JB was incredibly dull. Due, entirely to the bore town that is the area of Larkin (where we were staying) and the fact that there were no pubs or even cafes to just chill out in. So everyday we got a bus into JB town/city centre for a coffee in Roost café and to walk around Johor Bahru. Below are a few other details on over the next few days.
Wed 13th june
(Cloudy 30°c real feel 36°c 74%)
There was a thunderstorm (1:30pm) so we stayed in the cafe until it blew over. We were very tired, owing to the concrete floors, in the hostel, bouncing the sound around at night. Every little noise was unnecessarily exaggerated. Whilst waiting we compared/ reviewed hostels we had stayed in so far.
Then we booked our Mersing stay.
Later we visited the JB Bazar for some food, but it was not as good as Muar's.
At the hostel we met Ken a Chinese/Malay man.
Thu 14th
Bad sleep, there was so much noise. Someone was cleaning at 4am! So we laid in - no Singapore today.
Roost café for coffee - again.
Noisiest/ roughest bus ride. Genuinely didn't think the bus would make it to JB Sentral - Frank said that the driver, when he was born, probably turned and slapped his mother for holding him up for 9 months! Ha!
Ate dinner at BBC (Bulat Bulat Corner) a fixed food court. A rather cool place. All stall fronts are painted black, there is a door to the left of the circle serving hatch. You order what takes your fancy (drinks from the middle circle counter) and they bring it to you. We had a lovely meal. There was a huge family gathered on three adjoining tables near us. There was a plastic table cloth and piles and piles of (mostly) sea food from which they picked at.
"It's a Shell Out", a woman explained seeing our curious faces. Ah - ha.
Back to Double K and we watched the World cup opening ceremony/match, Ken was there too.
(Everybody showers after 11pm. WTF ?!?!?)
Hari Raya - the end of Ramadan/Eid celebrations - fireworks were going off upto mid night. Then again at midnight, right infront of our hostel - good thing we stayed upto watch the footie.
Friday 15th
(29°c real feel 34°c 79%)
Up late. Raining. Breakfast, which comprises of bread for toast, jam, weird tasting butter and another sweet spread. And tea and coffee.
Bus into town, more walking and coffee.
Bus ride back sat next to a man who spoke faster than Frank can! Seriously. I caught every third word, and Frank the second, of what he said. He'd been over the world, told us what he thought of some places (we think) a very friendly chap.
After dinner back to the hostel to watch more football. We met Atsna, a young woman with a strong voice and who works in finance in Singapore.
Sat 16th
Left for Mersing. Power cut in whole area at 10:40am i.e no air conditioning, so it feels about 34°c. So glad to be leaving here.
