we arrived in fiji not having a clue where we wanted to go or do.. story of our lives ! we ended up staying for a night on the main island just until we could get the boat to mana island the next day. we had arrived quite late so couldnt really see much and just did a quick supermarket shop to stock up on water as everythings dead expensive off the main land. then it was off to bed and up early in the morn. grant had been wetting herself about the beaches in fiji and was NOT happy to see day 1 brought rain rain and more rain!!
we headed out to mana island on a tiny motorised boat.. which then broke about an hour into the 2hr trip. one of the engines had failed so we went at a painfully slow pace for about another hour .. which made everyone really sea sick (i dont usually get travel sick but this was bad - dont like to think how moore felt!) until we got rescued by a woman from our hostel in basically a motorised canoe.. so bailed out into this.. we like to arrive in style!!
cause it was raining when we arrived everyone was indoors and we settled for playing cards and monopoly all day, and also discussing how boring our week would be if it carried on like this! but the next day brought glorious sunshine wahoo and the idea of changing our flight (Drastic i know haha) faded.
the first night the "family" at the hostel put on a show of fiji dancing for us, im still not sure if they're really related. must remember the manager, fred, who was a bit weird but tried to look after us really well - having great pride in his new internet he'd just installed, which took 3 years to turn on, the screen fuzzed up and down epileptically and also didnt even connect to the internet.. we woo'd politely at it!
the first day of sun we had there we went on a boat ride to castaway island to see where the film castaway with tom hanks in it, was filmed. i thought this would be a bit pointless since ive never seen it.. but really the trip is just to see how beautiful the island is so we swam in the sea round there and chillaxed for a few hrs.. a good day!
because there are no shops or anything on the island, all our meals were provided by the hostel. and tho the food was really nice to begin with.. it then was the same EVERY day.. and became really monotomous. so we found ourselves skanking off to the other (better equiped) hostel on the island quite a lot.. mainly cause this one had chocolate and a kareoke machine! we also all got a bit ill off the food provided towards the end.
on the island we also visited sunset beach, snorkelled around our hostel and visited the set of american Surviver where the huts they use are still set up. we also had a few bonfires on the beach at night and visited mana school where there are about 40 children, meeting the headmaster who was very friendly to us.
we had planned to have a night on a neightbouring island, Beachcomber, but this all went t*** up when we couldnt contact the main land to confirm we still wanted to go and turned into a bit of a long story.. but ended up with us having to stay there so we just got drunk to compensate and sang summer of 69 on kareoke, in short. me and grant also did STan, which was, interesting haha.
I can't really remember much else from Fiji, though it was really beautiful and we loved it there i think a week was enough cause im too much of a busy person and every day is the same there! we headed back on friday with moore in tow who did manage to visit beachcomber cause she had to get off the boat to be sick on it.. mixture of rubbish food, bright orange drinks and sea sickness! and then we were off to last stop australia!
