Jess in Europe
I am feeling better about Italy today. I am in Roma right now (Rome for us NON Italians), today hasnt been better Train wise, but I am getting used to the complete toolness of Italian men. I suppose it was just culture shock from the chiverly of France.
Pisa yesterday was a good day. After I posted my dissapointed blog, we wandered around the city for a bit in the shopping area. I did find a cute shirt in a store that was a good price, non tank top, which means I have to find a place cool enough to wear it.
We stopped at a gelato place and I got some Stracciatella (like a choclate chip ice cream, but better) in a cup and sat in the shade! Poor Maryann is not used to the humidity, I guess Evann and I have actually adjusted! We were trying to figure out what to do about making phone calls and such because Italian phones are horrible. We thought we were going to have to walk a LONG way back to the train station, but it turns out we were just down the street from it so we headed there and booked tickets to Rome (on the s***ty Italian trains!) and I called home to talk to my dad before work!
From the train station it is really easy to catch a bus, so we caught the HOT bus to the leaning tower. Thank goodness that everyone that lives there is used to the tourists, because we would have missed the stop, but some nice lady mummbled something in Italian and indicated we needed to get off the sweat box.
Now, the leaning tower os Pisa, really does look like the pictures. I totally expected it to be straighter then it was, but thouse Italian Engineers really did muck it up! It is the crazyiest thing to see. You just look and it and wonder how it is still standing... Amazing! We wandered around to the touristy shops and Evann and I got some sort of Liquer we have no idea what it is, but it is in a Leaning Tower Replica, and get this, we found shot glasses THAT LEAN! :) we were amused and stayed in the store longer then we needed because of the airconditioning! ;)
a bus ride back (in the sweat box) to the train station to catch the bus we needed, except I got a little antsy about our stop (not wanting to end up at the airport) and made Ev, and Maryann and I get off too soon, so we had to walk a little (in the shade at least!) to the train station.
Evann worked her pretty girl self to get the bus drivers to help us with what stop we needed to get off at and we headed back to the hotel. I did just end up getting another night at the Hotel de a******, because it was SO much hassle to try and get to the hostel, sometimes convinence is worth the extra £'s
I showered and we headed out to find dinner, Evann wanted to try this spagatti place and it was actually really yummy. The Italians know pasta thats for sure (but I still miss France and their food!) On the way back I spotted a bar (I am REALLY good at finding them) Maryann was pooped so we bid her Adu and Ev and I headed out across the river and down to the shore (seriously!)
This bar was really cool. Right on the shore of the River Arno cool tiki lights and mosquito things (to ward them off) I had my beer (it has been my goal to have the local beer where ever I go and so far I am a success) and Evann had her "house White Wine" and we sat and chatted and people watched. Then it got weird... well not too weird, but some what strange.
The little outside bar was getting crowded , and all of a sudden this lady with 2 guys behind her started talking loudly in Italian, it seemed like an announcement, but then she got more serious and started doing interpertive dance moves along with her speaking. The guys behind her repeated some of the Italian words every now and then, and then also did some weird dancing. So that was strange, but what was even weirder was that everyone else seemed really into it, it was the middle of a bar and some lady is moving like she is possessed and people liked it... I had to pee so we left.
We got up at the UNGODLY hour of 6;45am this morning! UGH! We had to catch a 9am train and needed breakfast, pack and to have the s***ty hotel (which used to be a nunnery BTW) call us a cab.
After some stressful moments at the train station (stupid Italians and their stupid inefficant train system) we made it onto our train where after we put our bags (SO HEAVY!) up in the racks, we discovered (after some Italians yelling at the conductor) that our train car was the ONLY one with broken aircondition... yup. 3 hours in a small compartment with no airconditioning... I LOVE Italian trains! :)
We made it to Rome though! :)
