Sorry about the belated Fraser Island blog.. but it is so hectic travelling around at the moment.
We arrived at Hervey Bay on the 16th February after a short 5 hour greyhound trip up the coast from Noosa. Hervey Bay was pretty small and unexcited but Chloe and I were so excited about going to Fraser Island the next day that we didn't care! The next morning we woke up at 6am for our briefing... which involved a hilarious government funded film about safety on Fraser Island... the best bit was when the described what to do if a dingo approaches- 'cross your arms over you chest and back away slowly'- ok it sounds simple but the two girls who acted it on screen were bloody hilarious! We then were put into a group of 9 which had 3 Candadians- Leah, Kari and Matt- a Norwegian couple- Howard and Lisa- a german girl- Evelyn- and a Tahitian guy called Albin. All of whom turned out to be great company. After doing a quick supermarket shop, and organising our vans with the camping equipment, we were off. And then the rain began. And it went on and on and on. So the first day we were not the happiest campers haha. Once on the Island we drove through central station to Wanggoolba Creek, but only Chloe, Evelyn, Matt and I had the bottle to actually leave the van and trek there!! Then we all set up camp and made a gorgeous pasta dish on our hob- which was sandy but still good tucker. We socialised with the other vans and everyone was lovely, particularly these two scottish girls called Katie and Gillian. Chloe and I slept in the van, which was one of the worst nights sleep I have ever had, but we had to be up at 6am anyway due to the tides, so it wasn't worth sleeping much anyway!
The next day we visited India head and the Champagne pools, which were pretty but not as impressive as expected. We had a dip in the pools and watched the waves smash over the rocks to create the champagne bubbles, and did cartwheels and handstands at India Head. We then returned to set up camp only to disturb a massive hord of sand flies. They are the worst bugs ever to grace the earth. The little b******s would even bite through your clothes. Chloe, Lisa and I took refuge in the van but the sweltering heat was too much. Thank god for Eli Creek! We visited that next and the gorgeous, cool water took my breath away, it was lovely. That evening we chilled in our camp, looking up at a clear sky of stars and drinking some cheeky goon in the process.
The next day was the best by far- LAKE MCKENSIE DAY! I have never seen such beautiful scenery, it was literally like being in a shampoo advert or something. We played in volley ball in the water and took hundreds of photos... it was awesome! Chloe and I also mastered the head flick, which can be seen in my album- tell me that doesnt look like an advert eh!?
We then drove back across to the mainland only to have to get a 13 hour bus to Airlie Beach within 2 hours of arriving back in Hervey! It was incredibly stressful, but we made it here pretty much intact. Airlie is lovely and we have had 2 gorgeous days of sunshine. We have done the Market and the Lagoon (so pretty). It has given us a chance to find our feet and sort out Chloe's trip to Cairns finally! Tonight we are having a few drinks but being sensible as tomorrow we hit the Whitsundays!! Woop woop!! I am so excited! SV Whithaven here we come. So you won't hear from me for a few days guys but I will do another epic post soon!
Love to you all xxxxxxxxxx
