Jess's Overseas Adventures!
I'm in love with Lake Geneva! (or Lac Leman as it is called in French) its just so beautiful with the all the towns along the lake and the mountain backdrop...Yesterday I was in Zermatt and I went up to the Klein Matterhorn by cable car. From there you can see Italy, France while you're in Switzerland and the view of the Matterhorn is amazing! ... oh and the Klein Matterhorn is 3883m! And I went right to the very top. There were 3 sections to the trip, small ski lift cable car up to Furi, then from Furi to Trockener Steg, there is one big cable ar with about 30 people in it. I got out there and thought that was it! Then one of the staff pointed me onto the next leg... which was possibly the scariest thing I've ever done. I was obviously so freaked out someone lent me a ski pole to lean on! But its quite justifiable as near the top the cable car is going up at a 90 degree angle and you're facing the mountain face on. Had to get a lift and then the stairs to get to the top. Amazing views but it was -8 so I didn't linger that long. I took some photos but without really knowing what I was looking at it was all mountains and glaciers, which gets a bit repetative after about 5 shots!I got the train back from Zermatt to Vevey, and stayed here last night and am staying again tonight. Last night I saw Scoop - the Woody Allen movie, and actually really enjoyed it. (I think the gratuitous shots of Hugh Jackman topless helped) Vevey is on Lake Geneva and is the birthplace of Nestlé. Today I went to the castle in the picutre - the Chateau De Chillon, which dates back to the 13th century and was once owned by the Duke of Savoy. At first I thought it was going to be ruined by adolescent Europeans on a school tour but they left soon after I arrived and it was lovely. The castle is built on a rock on the lake so parts of it drop down straight into the water. The view from some of the windows was just amazing.. I took photos but they don't do it justice really. After I walked along the lake shore in Montreux which is between the castle an Vevey. Pa, you'll be impressed - not only did Freddie Mercury live there until he died, the casino there was rebuilt after a fire destroyed it... during a concert given by Frank Zappa and the others of Invention, a rocket flare was fired into the ceiling, setting fire to the building. As smoke from the fire soared above the lake, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple was inspired to write Smoke on the Water as he watched from his hotel room! After lunch I went to the Musée Jenisch which had an exhibition of paintings by Francois Bocion, then I went to the Musée de l'Alimentation - A Museum dedicated to Food set up by Nestlé. It was really interesting and I spent a couple of hours there.Tomorrow I'm going back to London in the evening, so getting the train from here to Geneva, but stopping in Lausanne on the way to see the Olympic Museum as the IOC headquarters are therexx
