Got to Mumbai after a 12 hour train journey, where we had to pay for our food and Vic slept on the floor, it's no Rajtani Express! Checked into our 4th floor accommodation that Nathan had told us about. We felt like hamsters in a cage, there were no windows and the room was tiny! After settling in we were asked if we wanted to be extras in a Bollywood film, of course we jumped at the chance!
Surprise surprise it was raining! Had a nice day pottering round Mumbai. We were pleasantly surprised as people had said Mumbai was like Delhi, it was fine though.
Got an early night ready for the big day. Got picked up at 8am then had to get a taxi, train and rickshaw to the studio. The train journey was something else...we got to one stop and a ridiculous amount of Indian men stampeded on shouting and jeering like football hooligans! It's funny now but pretty horrific at the time, especially as we were trying to get off!!
Had our make up done straight away and given salad sandwiches...eating is cheating when you're a film star! The costumes were hilarious, not quite sure what era they were trying to capture! We're supposed to be Americans!! Did quite a bit of sitting round with rats and mice, what is it with these rodents?! It was particularly hard watching them scurry past just as the producer shouted "SILENCE, CAMERA ROLLING"! Our phobias are slowly being cured!
Had some lunch...in a different room to the stars, who may we add are big names in Bollywood! Shortly after Sal got to make her debut appearance (they obviously didn't like the look of Vic and Jen) where she had to pretend she was coming out of the changing rooms and look shocked as the main characters were fighting! To be fair, we not even sure she was visible!
Decided we couldn't face the journey back so we demanded (like divas) that we were given a direct taxi back to the hostel. Unfortunately, the engine died and we had to get into another taxi...after hanging around on the motorway...in the rain....oh to be famous!!
When we got back to the hostel we met up with Nathan and went out for drinks. Had a great night, especially when we were joined by a crazy Iranian called Michael. He wasn't quite as offensive as the Canadian in Colva but he did tell Sal she did an easy degree and that he left his girlfriend from 'the London' because she wanted to take a baby from him?!! Nathan was due to leave for the airport so we walked back with him, leaving Michael chomping on his salad (a snake, not a snack) that he "ate like an Indian"...Michael's words, not ours!! Unfortunately the photo of him doesn't capture the bit of cucumber that nestled in his beard! A very funny night!
Jen and Sal got up at 6am to leave for the airport. Vic spent the day aimlessly wandering round Mumbai before getting her flight at midnight. It was at this point we started to realise our hygiene standards had lapsed and even the aeroplane toilets seemed luxurious.
We've had an absolutely fantastic time in India. At times it has been hard but well worth the experience. We realise we're extremely lucky to have seen and done what we have and are proud of how well we've coped.
