Wow!!! is all I can say about Ayers rock!
We arrived on the Friday lunchtime and got our hire car from the airport - a silver Toyota corolla - an automatic which took some time to get use to!
We drove straight to Ayers rock having seen it already from the skies as we came into land. It cost us 25bucks each for a 3 day pass to the Uluru national park so we paid up and drove to the big rock itself! which is mahoosive!! We drove all the way around it taking time to take photos and admire it etc, before drivinjg back to the Yulara Resort where we got to the campsite and paid 10dollars for a 'pitch' in the overflow but where we still get access to the ablutions and the gas BBQ.
We then drove to the supermarket to pick up some grub and drinks for the next day and then went to the pioneer BBQ and bar which does cheapish food and so we tried a kangeroo wrap - which was actually nice although a bit chewy sometimes. There was a guy playing live music (including the digeredo - i know i still cant spell it!) which was good so we stayed a while.
After our first freezing night sleeping in the car in which we slept very little we were awake at about 6am and so drove to Ayers Rock again (only takes about 15mins from the campsite) and drove round to the sunrise viewpoint. The sun came up at 7.30am and everyone like us was stood around freezing but it was definately worth it as you can just see the clours change as the sun comes up its amazing.
Once the sun had risen we drove over to Kata Tjuta (the olgas) which are a group of loads of monliths. But once we arrived and the sun was up we were so sleepy as we'd missed out on a proper nights sleep so had a snooze in the car for an hour before we set off and tackled the 'Valley of the winds' walk which took us about 2 hours as its really steep some of it but the views you get at the 2nd lookout point are well worth it!!
Once back at the car we drove back to the campsite and ate the bread and cheese we'd got for lunch then had a shower to make ourselves feel more human again.
We then drove back to Uluru and did a short walk to an aboriginal waterhole and along the way saw some old aboriginal wall art on the cave walls which was pretty cool. Then we headed to the sunset point to wait for the view there, as we were early we sat in the car and had another game of scrabble. Then the sun started to set at about 6pm so we watched the rock again turn a million different shades of red/pink/brown before turning dark.
Again we went to the pioneer bar for food i had just a pizza this time. We then wrapped up in more clothes for bed in an attempt to stay warmer overnight, which worked a bit but it was still really cold!!
Once we woke up it was time to get dressed/packed and head back to drop the car off at the airport (and pay up on the rental :( ). The airport is tiny but we weren't there that long before we took off once again this time headed to Cairns.
We arrived in Cairns and were greeted by sunshine - yay! and phoned a hostel we'd seen on the internet in perth and they came to pick us up. We had to stay in separate dorms last night but today i got moved so we're in the same dorm tonight. We get a free meal voucher at the dorm we're staying at here so we headed down into town to check it out and you get 4 choices of a small portion for free so I had spag bol and vic had Chilli so was all good. We then spent a bit of time wandering about the night markets before walking back stopping at the supermarket to pick up some washing powder and drinks etc. We then watched a bit of TV before heading to bed.
This morning i moved rooms and am now just waiting on Vic before we can head into Cairns city centre to sort out her ticket home hopefully at Qantas and look into booking a reef day trip for tomorrow.
Anyway hope thats you all updated on what we've been up to now, I am trying to get my photies up on here but proving a bit of a mission with some of these computers but as soon as i can i promise they'll be up here.
