Jen's Journeys
...you best dress sporty! Today was a very active but very beautiful day! We started out a little later again today. When Maite got home last night, she informed us she wasn't getting out of bed before 9:30 today. :) and today we hopped in her car and headed down the coast first to a town called Bermeo. It's an adorable fishing village set right on the coast (which makes sense for a fishing village, no?). We walked around the marina area and the old town. We were even treated to a giant motorcycle ride-through at one point. LOTS of Harleys in the region, it seems! If any of you are "Sons of Anarchy" fans, we even saw some guys in their leathers a couple of days ago down in Sevilla. :) After this we headed part way to the next town, and embarked upon the most amazing climb I've ever undertaken. See, this climb started at the top of one hill/cliff, went down to the shore, across a connecting bridge, and then up a big rock island to the church on the top. So you start out fearing for your life climbing down rocky terrain, but then you're amazed by the views, then you nearly pass out climbing 220 steps to the top of the island, but then you're amazed by the views, then you're ok coming down those steps, and then you nearly die when your heart nearly beats right out your chest as you go back up that rocky terrain to get back to the car. But we did it, even Jeanne on her bum knee! And as you'll see, the views were totally worth it (in case you didn't get that from my earlier commentary). And once again Maite made us look wimpy by kicking our lazy American butts. Then we headed to Bakio, a small beach town just down the coast. Actually, in the picture below, that beach is Bakio. So, we go there and headed to a small restaurant - I was once again thrwarted on just finding a cheese sandwich, but fortunately my lack of appetite had followed through today, so Maite and Jeanne ate while I hung out. Then we took our siesta on the beach. Yes, life is rough in Spain. Granted, we were on the beach from probably 5-8 pm. Not normal beach hours, but the sun is not up until 10:30 pm by us, either! Another stop for a quick coffee/soda, and we headed back to Bilbao. We stopped on the way in at a point that overlooks the whole city. Very pretty - its set in a valley. And unlike most of Spain, the basque country is very green. So now it's again only 11 pm but we are WIPED OUT, so it will be an "early to bed" night...well, at least for the Spanish. :)

Jen Charles Extreme training!
Mom She reminds me of Mary Ironsides.
Jen Charles Can't say I remember what she looks like!
Anna Maite wore an American shirt for you! ;-)
Stephanie So, when you are conversing with Maite, do you mostly speak in Spanish or English?
Stephanie SO cute!! Is this the first time you've been to these villages? Or did you visit here when you studied abroad?
Stephanie So so beautiful! I'm green with envy!!!!!!!!
Stephanie You got to ring the bell?!?! awesome.
Stephanie Love this one too. The water looks so blue.
Jen Charles We speak Spanish. She is an English teacher, but knows we are here to speak Spanish. And, she's headed to Toronto for a month with student soon.
Jen Charles Yep, my first time to these villages. All new stuff yesterday!
Jen Charles Yeah - the rope is outside so people can ring it. So it rings pretty much incessantly. :)
Jen Charles It was AMAZING how blue it is!
Joan Blaschke Loved the scenery. How great that you got a rather young host woman with...a car to take you to local spots that maybe...tourists would otherwise miss! Keep the photos coming, por favor. Are these photos from your iphone or what?? Joan
BLT Looks like the Great Wall of China....maybe a little bit?
BLT If you haven't watched "The Way" with Martin Sheen, do so. You'll love the scenery. It's filmed on El Camino de Santiago. This little church reminded me of the movie.
Jen Charles It actually really did! Granted, I haven't been to the great wall, but it looked like what I imagine! :)
Jen Charles I think this one in particular is from Jeanne's camera, but most are frome my Canon Rebel.
