Escape the Rat Race!
After 3 months of working 15 hour days with 30 minutes of breaks and basically being treated pretty rottenly at work i'd had about enough of Sydney! It's a lovely city, don't get me wrong, but i think it's better for visiting than living in. It's such an intense place and everyone seems very up tight and wrapped up in their own lives and problems.
My friend Amie had had an even worse time in Sydney having struggled to find a job and been forced to continue the horrible work for accommodation for months. We were both ready for a new start, we had a little brainstorm and decided we wanted to go somewhere more chilled out, near a beach but with ample work opportunities. Amie's cousin lives just in land from the gold coast and offered to put us up while we got on our feet. So i gave work 4 days notice and we booked a flight then and there! It was a great feeling to be moving on again and i was totally ready for a more relaxed lifestyle!
We packed our backpacks and headed of to Gold Coast Airport, Queensland. Amie's cousin Lou picked us up from the airport and drove us to their house which is in the middle of what looks like a rainforest! It was right up Tamborine Mountain and was an awesome place! We rented a car as that was the only way around this kind of place and went exploring. We found wild koalas and kangaroos and lots and loads of beaches!
We applied online to jobs and i also ran my CV in to one restaurant on our first day there... The next day i got a call for an interview, an hour later, and after a trial i got the job! Being employed within 48 hours was pretty nice and put my mind at ease in terms of saving. Unfortunately the pay was less than in Sydney and there were quite a lot less hours. As Amie was still looking for work we decided to try the whole work for accomadation thing again but in a small hostel this time. We quickly found somewhere on Gumtree and moved in at the end of the week!
