Had a great boat trip to Halong Bay! We managed to take plenty of photos- check out soon as you've read this! We even flew the "Jo and Jensta world tour" flag!
Met some really nice people and a Kiwi called Claire who is travelling with us at the moment! There was also a crazy Vietnamese girl called Hang who made us all laugh loads!
After we had lunch on the boat we made our way out to the bay. The scenery was beautiful and all you could see for miles was loads and loads of limestone peaks! It reminded us of Yangshou in China! An awesome sight to see! The boat docked at one of the larger peaks and we were able to go inside and check out the caves. The boat then stopped by some houses dotted amongst he water. As soon as the boat stopped who would appear but our favourite people..............................The sellers! Boats of sellers came paddling towards us with their small boats packed out with boxes of Oreo, Ritz biscuit, Pringle, Tiger beer and wine. We managed to buy a cheap bottle of wine for about a quid after about 10 minutes of haggling!! These sellers really don't back down I tell you! That evening we had dinner on the boat and then chilled on the top deck while having a few beers!
The next day we docked the boat and went for lunch at a local restaurant. There was this huge vat of snake wine on the counter. It was literally full of different sized snakes. Yuk, and this man on our table brought a glass of it, rather him than me! Later that day we found some smaller bottles of wine in a gift shop which had cobra's heads inside, again yuk!!
After the boat trip we took the bus back to Hanoi .At about 4pm we arrived in an area called the Old Quarter. We went round the town and looked for some cheap rooms. Eventually we ended up staying in a $3 each a night room. It would have been a spacious room but we decided to cram the 3 of us in there! The owner dragged us in an extra mattress but we quickly told him we wanted this bed for $2 as it was on the floor! The stairs to our pent house apartment may aswell have been vertical. They were pretty dangerous and we soon learnt that after a few beers/ vodkas the stairs and flip-flops don't go that well together!
After sorting out our room we went for food and drink! Had some delicious pancakes and some cheap Hanoi vodka for around 33p a shot with mixer. We soon decided that the 66p Smirnoff was probably a better option as the cheapo vodka smelt and tasted pretty rough! A few drinks later and surviving a massive downpour we arrived ringing wet at another bar! I tell you our clothes were wet through and the rain almost washed out my contact lenses. As we left the bar the owner gave us disposable rain macs to put on. We quickly put them on but Jo made it into a complete mission and managed to some how put hers on totally wrong. The local people were laughing at us plus the mess Jo had got herself into! I think she may have put her head through one of the armholes or something like that! The night doesn't end here-After this we went to a street bar, had a few more drinks then got a motorbike taxi to a club in town! Claire and me were hanging on one motorbike and Jo and another lad on another. Ended up at a crazy club full of locals... Passed out in bed around 3am..A good night had by all!
