Jen's Travel Diary
On Saturday we met up with Dee, her husband John, and his son Tom for a trip to "Phillip Island". We drove for two hours and reached the beach by 10am. It was a really nice day, the weather was warm and we managed to do some bodyboarding. The beach was quite nice to, although being a bay it had a bit of seaweed. In the evening we all went for a few drinks at a pub nearby. Then Annie, Tom and myself went onto "Brunswick Street" to grab a very nice kebab.
On Sunday we moved to "The Nunnery" hostel. It is a little cheaper but still in a good position. In the morning we went to the "Rialto Towers" and made our way to the Observation Deck on the 55th floor. It had spectacular views over the whole of Melbourne. In the afternoon we met up with Tom and went to Warrandyte State Park. We sat by the Yarra river and Annie and Tom swam, that was once Annie decided there were going to be no snakes in the river! After that we took a walk into the park and managed to see some kangaroos and parrots. In the evening Dee and John invited us to a lovely barbecue at there home, where Annie and I had our first taste of true Australia - Kangaroo steaks! They live in a very traditional style house, a mid-Victorian home with a verranda.
On Monday Australia celebrates 'Labour Day' so most people closed their business and took the day off, heading for the beach. We did the same! Dee and John invited us to join themselves and Tom to go to the beach near Leongatha. The beach was georgeous, especially when the sun came out and temperature rose to 30C. There were miles of fine yellow sand and some good waves in the clear sea.We spent most of the day there and had a picnic, with the food left from the barbecue. It was a really fun day. In the evening we all went out to dinner at a nearby place and then Annie, Tom and I went onto Brunswick Street where we heard that a live band was playing at the 'Evelyn Hotel'. We had a few drinks in the bar next door and then moved to see the live hip-hop style band - it was a bit surreal but I had a great night!
Today (Tuesday) we got up early to head to the 'Immigration Office' to get our visas stamped, a process that was well organised and took about 45mins. After that we took the free City-Circle Tram around the city. We have also booked our trip to travel along the "Great Ocean Road", starting on Wednesday for 3 days. This evening we are going out for a meal and a few beers along "Brunswick Street".
