Have just had a really enjoyable day in Adelaide even though we thought we were in a scene from Miami Vice when we stepped off the bus this morning. We were treated to about 6 police cars and motorbikes chasing a car up the main street. The sirens were blaring and sparks were flying off the car being chased where the tyres had exploded and he must have been going along on the wheel rims. Made us feel a bit sick as we thought any minute some pedestrians would go flying in the air but thankfully that didn't happen. Just goes to show you are not safe wherever you are!
Things did get better and we have seen all the sights Adelaide has to offer. We walked through the shopping arcades where there was an abundance of good coffee, cakes and pastries, along the river passing the festival centre and into the Botanic Gardens. As we thought we should have a bit of history we went to the immigration museum and once again were amazed at the way the old Brits treated the Aborigines and how racist the immigration laws were.
A trip to Central Market followed - which is mainly all food and cafes. After the longhaul up the west coast and through the centre with next to nothing available it was amazing to see the array of fresh fruit, vegetables, cheeses and meats on offer. We had an excellent cheap Italian meal and lovely red wine - delicious.
Adelaide is a modern multi-cultural city but seems to maintain the old colonial charm and there are plenty of parks and open green spaces. Like Perth there is an excellent cheap transportation system and for 3 pounds 50p we could hop on and off buses, trams and trains as often as we liked and the bus stop is right outside the campsite.
Tomorrow we set off on our journey to Melbourne along the coast and the Great Ocean Road.
Will be in touch.
