Last time I wrote we were excited about our dinner in Uruguay and I
said we'd report back. Well we excitedly went to our favourite place
to find it completely shut- the restaurants take it in turns to open in
low season so we ended up somewhere else eating uncooked potatoes.. We
felt even more ripped off when the bill arrived and it was over a
grand! (Because of the exchange rate-40 to the pound don't start
panicking!)
Well now we're back in BA listening to Tango and not talking about the
Falklands... feel like Basil Fawlty... Don't mention the war...
There's a permenant protest camp at the end of our road dedicated to
it..
We are also trying to avoid getting Swine Flu..it has been declared a pandemic here and is the one of the worst affected places...schools and universities have been closed, everyone is wearing masks and we cannot get the bus or tube...we should leave but cannot do anything about our flights so will sit it out until we head to Ushaiau at the bottom of the map next Wednesday...
We've been spending time with my friend Nic who has come to stay with
an Argentinian she met at Rio carnaval. Yesterday we walked for miles round
town but saw surprisingly little as we kept chatting then realising
we'd walked the wrong way or in a big square. We did make it to
Recoleta cemetery though which was quite extraordinary...huge ornate
tombs with whole families in and of course the grave of Eva Peron aka
Evita. Having seen her in death we walked back across the whole of
town to visit the pink presidential palace and sing don't cry for me
Argentina in front of her balcony...
Scarily Nic told us today that red meat takes 3 months to be digested
so our bellies must be full to the brim with all the steak we've been
eating.. There is very little else though- it's not a place for foodie
vegetarians that's for sure! The scare lasted until dinner for Charles
when he had a massive steak sandwich...he reports that it was
lovely...I'm transferring onto the pasta and sauce for a bit!
