Around the World Forever
I stopped in Copan Ruinas to check out the famous ruins here. These are some of the best preserved and the most studied ruins in the Mayan world and are not to be missed. The small tourist town here is pretty nice and a cool place to meet other travelers. In the pictures, you see a ball court with 3 head like objects on each side. The players would have a ball and try to hit the statue like objects while the elite sat around and watched. Then, the "winner" would be sacrificed over on the round altar (see pics). Check out the little divot at the top of the altar where they would place his heart after they ripped it out and note the spiral groove for the blood to run down. Also from the pictures, you will note that the ancient Mayans were clearly Penn State fans and are the original designers of the Heisman trophy!
The day after visiting the ruins, I got a ride to La Entrada to catch a bus north with Uleana, a Swiss girl that bought a car in Guatemala and is driving around with her partner in crime, Anna from Australia, who has been traveling for 2 years. Thanks for the lift girls!
