Who would've thought the 'sub-tropical rain-forest, without dry season' could be so cold! Our little hut soon warmed up, though, as the 'jungle central heating' (AKA a big log fire) kicked in. The only other guests at Yacutinga were an American family, the Roberts, they were really nice, and we got on well. It was a good job, too, 'cos our little group, along with Yacutinga staff Enrique and Nicolas, were together for all the activities.
Most of you probably know how much we like our 'home comforts', and how 'nancy' I am, when it comes to bugs. So imagine how surprised we were to really enjoy our rain-forest experience! Kayaking along a jungle creek? Great! A night-hike looking for bugs and animals? Yes! An early-morning bird-watching walk? Sounds cool! Where are the real Jeff and Sally-Anne, and what have you done with them?
The food at the Lodge was fantastic, and our room, though basic, was really comfortable. As it was quite cold, there were huge log fires to sit and chat around. Enrique taught us how to make the famous 'Yerba Mate' tea over the fire, and we enjoyed it so much, the Roberts' kids brewed up later on!
We saw a fair amount of critters, too! The little coati-mundis, agutis, toucans, owls, butterflies (and bizarrely, a butterfly's tongue), and lots of birds and bugs! It was just great, and we were sad to leave the Lodge, the rain-forest, and our new friends.

Sarah Roberts Jeff, Perhaps now that some time has passed I should tell you that when we were on a night hike my husband Paul made a point of pulling up the rear and rattling bushes every now and again. The light from the whites of your eyes upon turning around in terror of "what was there" shone for us all. You OK hearing that story now? -Much love, the "not so really nice" Roberts Family
Sarah Roberts ps you're still my idol and I still want to be you when I grow up.
