Say the name "Quito" and most people picture dirty city streets filled with poverty and crime. I'm happy to report that for the most part, Quito is actually a lovely town. We've spent our few days here exploring the great colonial architecture and sampling the delicious Ecuadorian fare (think warm savory soups and flakey cheesy empanadas!).
One of the architectural highlights was the Basílica del Voto Nacional. I've sometimes felt torn about visiting churches as a tourist as I don't want to disrespect a holy space. Also, I've often wondered if the outward beauty of such churches is meant to please God or to please man. So, as I walked into the basilica, the question I posed to myself was, "Is God here?"
Wandering the length of the church, I admired one huge stained glass window after another, each depicting a scene from Jesus' life on Earth. There was also an emotion-filled sculpture of Jesus on the cross. As I studied each piece of artwork, I felt more and more moved. The building was truly dedicated to God and I could feel His presence in the space.
With that positive experience tucked away in my heart, I'm ready to leave Quito. We've admired men's art dedicated to God, so now we're off to Cotopaxi National Park to wonder at the natural beauty God has gifted to man!
