Ecuador has just about everything an outdoorsy person could dream of! We've spent the last week and a half or so exploring all that this beautiful country has to offer. Here's a brief laundry list of what we've been up to:
· Visited Parque Condor - a great rehabilitation center for large birds like condors, eagles, and owls.
· Climbed Mt. Pasochoa - measuring in at 13,775ft, it might be the closest I ever get to hiking a "14er."
· Hiked to an unnamed waterfall - after watching our guide nearly fall off a cliff, I decided to enjoy the view from the top. Jeff, of course, soldiered on to see it from below and I entertained myself with making a flower necklace.
· Explored Cotopaxi National Park - the misty weather made our lake walk feel almost mystical.
· Watched Tungarahua Volcano puff out black smoke - don't worry, it's totally safe! (or so say the locals…)
· Soaked ourselves at El Pailón del Diablo waterfall - crawling through the caves is definitely not for the faint of heart (or the claustrophobic), but getting behind this monster of a waterfall was totally worth it!
· Relaxed in thermal hot springs - thank you volcano…
· Rode horses through lush green mountains - this was a first for both of us and it definitely won't be the last.
· Visited the Baños Zoo - gotta hit one in every country!
· Hiked up a mountain to Café del Cielo - a ham sandwich never tasted so good.
· Played with curious monkeys at Paseo de Monos (a monkey rehabilitation site) - one even curled up in my lap for a nap…so cute!
Can you say Heaven?!

Bonnie Denholm Hi Stef and Jeff - I am a bit late signing on to your blog, but have been thinking of you since last fall. We had training for Asian Tropics (Toyota Elephant Passage now) - so saw others from out Docent class, Stef. Missed you - but am sending you docent vibes! Will try to follow along now and get caught up to what all you have been doing. Have a blast (as I am sure you are). I did ASK ME at Tropical Discovery for Zoo Lights and talked alot about South America - Amazon and the Arapaina (well, didn't talk alot about alot, more 60 sec messages - it was crazy crowds!). Fun to shift thinking to South America rather than Asia sometimes (I always liked the maned wolf station too) - guess I need to see when I can visit there sometime. Bye for now - Bonnie
Alan Sounds wonderful, I only spent a night in Quito. Where next? Galapagos Islands are close and I found them to be a real deal for tourists (and science types like us).
Stefanie Bonnie, great to hear from you! I can hardly wait to get back in at the zoo! Alan, we're in Cuenca now and then we're headed to the Amazon. No Galapagos for us this time...it was between Amazon or Galapagos for this trip and the rainforest was slightly more budget friendly. We'll definitely get out to the islands someday though!
lisa south america looks gorgeous! you and jeff must be so in shape now... with all these outdoorsy activities youve been doing :) how's the food?
