Day 40- 29 May - a “rest” day in St Louis. We’ve been running on fumes lately so its good to slow down and recharge the batteries. That plus it is Memorial Day - a quiet holiday here when Americans honour their war dead
Slept in til 8.30, bright clear blue sky and the temperature is soon back up to 29deg C. We Googled ‘breakfast near me’ and came up with ‘Chris@the docket’. Didn’t have a clue about the place but being only 600m away sold it. Turned out to be a fabulous “Classic American” breakfast place - bacon, hash browns, eggs over easy and a short stack of pancakes (with butter & maple syrup. My favourite!! And there were policemen there - a sure sign this was the best place in town. Yes! I know I will have to pay for this when I get back home- slim rations, at the gym, running up the hill. Arrgh! Meantime I’m enjoying the best if American cuisine.
After, we wandered through the downtown area of St Louis and finally came across a Memorial Day service in front of the Soldiers Museum here. There was a small brass band playing and singing bluesy sort of music - and they were very good. After that a few speeches and we left when the sunshine got too much. After a breather back at the apartment we went for a cruise on the Mississippi (only $22 for seniors) in a fake stern wheel steamship. It was nice to be on the river looking back at the city There was a baseball game on St Louis Cardinals vs Kansas City Royals. We considered going until we discovered the $120/seat price tag. So we watched to game for a while in a sports bar and ate some chicken wings. About an hour later we got bored and came back for another rest.
We finished the day with a Calzone at the Sauce on the Side restaurant on the ground floor of this apartment building - easy. And that was the end of Memorial Day 2023. Off to Springfield MO tomorrow morning.
