Day 18- up early at Petra and headed south for 2 hours to Wadi Rum. VERY dry country, real desert territory, fabulous location for many films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian etc. We stopped off at the visitors centre for coffee and a crispy chicken filled roll (nice), registered at our tent campsite and then rolled on out for a desert 4 wheel drive. Wadi Rum is a spectacular array of sandstone hills randomly scattered around about a barren desert floor. The wind and water have carved the rock in every shape imaginable- reminds me of the desert areas in south-west USA. Lots of photo opportunities and no, we didn’t get stuck in the sand - we were on the back of a Mitsubishi Triton 4 door 4 wheel drive (old, tired and poorly maintained). Way out in the middle of nowhere we stopped at a Bedouin tent which proved to a curio shop - and they offered tea, all sitting round a cooking fire inside the tent! It was good fun - the young Bedouin guys could speak a bit of English and there were lots of jokes. The wind blew much stronger and we were out back on the track heading for our tent with my new keffiyeh on (see pic). This rag-head gear is really good in this environment.
