JB & PG's Big Adventure
A brief postie from Zanzibar. We wrote one the other day but the computer let us down again. So here goes.......
Stone Town is easy to get lost in as it is a maze of narrow streets and markets. We took a short boat ride to an off shore island which had a sanctuary for giant tortoises whiuch lived up to their name. Then we transfered to our resort for 3 days of rand r.(we needed it after two stressfully long days of truck travel). It was too hot to move and most time was spent lying in the shaded bar or swimming the indian ocean which was so warm. We took a half days snorkelling trip to a reef just off from another small island away from zanzibar. We very quickly got sunburnt without realising as we swam in the crystal clear waters. Great coral in pristine condition but not the best fish but still very beautiful. This trip included a fish BBQ lunch on a desert island beach followed by the biggest plate of the freshest sweetest fruit I have ever eaten. We returned stuffed and burnt!!!. Our evenings were spent eating in the beach restaurant indulging in all sorts of fruits of the sea. A full moon completed a very romantic stay on the island.
Zanzibar is very tropical and reminded us in places of Thailand. We left with good memories as we returned to Dar Es Salaam for another night camping on the beach under palm trees. Looking forward to Malawi where i will discover whether it is now acceptable to where flares once again. The tennis ball test may be waiting for me!!!
Lots of love from Pete and Janet
