JB & PG's Big Adventure
Hi Folks, well we are actually in Malawi but for some inexplicable reason the computer fails to recognise this as a country and so I had to write Mozambique. We have a day off today as we must wait for visas to pass through Mozambique and into Zimbabwe. Good news for us as it means we have a little time to catch up on communications. Predictably therefore I have forgotten to bring the cd of photos! May have to wait until Oz now (December) when we are in one place for more than a microsecond. Everywhere we have settled for a few nights has been wonderfully remote. Long sandy beaches, no tourists, and therefore none of the means of communication that only the tourists use!
On leaving Dar es Salaam in Tanzania we rose at 5am (par for the course on this trip!) and I went for a lovely walk along the beach with 5 of my favourite cannine pals to watch the sun rise. They defended me brilliantly against the almost certain crime that was to be inflicted on me by fishermen, joggers and other otherwise congenial looking people... I suppose they must have known best!
After a quick stop to pick up provisions, which consists mainly of keeping my chocolate fetish up to date, we got back in the truck to do yet another epic 12 hour drive south into the mountains of Tanzania. I am completely unable to comment on the mountainous and supposedly picturesque town of Iringa as we arrived late at night, pitched tents, slept for 5 hours then were on the road again whilst it was still dark! However, the weather was a much craved change as the humidity lifted and lush green palms surrounding tiny thatched mud houses became more prolific. We swished by them to the sounds of "musungu", "give me money" and "jambo" which well up like a firework niose as they are snatched away by the wind. Our drive did take us past herds of small (ish) forest elephant in Mikumi National park, so I was happy anyway!
The following day we drove another 12 hours into Malawi. We got into Chitimba beach camp on the shores of Lake Malawi at 5.30pm and it was a lovely 34*C, our tent stayed at a balmy 31*C all night!! The folllowing day was spent lazing on the beach or in the beach bar out of the sun. Despite all attempts to stop it, I am gradually going a golden brown! We transferred to another beach (Kande) the next day where we snorkelled in Lake Malawi and saw some of the most amazingly bright blue fresh water fish. Now all we have to do is pray we didn't pick up a pet Bilharzia bug along the way!
We went to a local villlage in Kande where we had a wonderful African meal. Rice and beans again! It's been so long since we last had it (almost 3 weeks) that we were ecstatic. Didn't realise how much we had been missing Kenyan food.
The view on the photo of this postie is the kind of landscape we have been drinving through lately. We will leave Malawi tomorrow, Pete is very disappointed that the old coke bottle/tennis ball test has been discontinued. He was looking forward to that!
Lots of love to all. Janet and Peter
