Good Evening Everyone,
This was a pretty quiet day, but one filled with a lot more walking.
I slept in a little later this morning and had a light breakfast of yogurt and a muffin with o.j. and coffee. Didn't really know what I wanted to do today. It was very overcast but neither warm nor cool and there was no breeze.
After a bit of thought, I decided to take the bus over to Lelant to see if I could get into the church, then I'd walk down to the beach, then go back to St. Ives for some shopping.
I was happy to find the church unlocked today. I spent a long time in there trying to absorb everything. The church is very, very old--dating back to the 12th century.
There was one area that was inaccessible, so I don't know what was back there. There are some modern things that are showing some wear and tear and I'm sure the present day church probably lacks the funds to make some improvements. For example, each pew was covered with a blanket-type strip. They just seemed a bit worn and dirty to me. It would be nice if they had fabric-covered bench cushions....but what they did have fascinated me. On each pew seat was an individual cushion that was decorated with a needlepoint, cross-stitch or crewel design. Some were dated as having been made in the 70s or 80s. I took lots of pictures of these. I thought they were great and wish I knew how to make one.
While I was inside, another family wandered in to look around. I signed the visitor book and picked up some literature regarding the history of the church and left some money in the box.
I finally left the church and decided to wander around the newer churchyard that I didn't explore the other day. As another "living churchyard," it was difficult to get to some areas due to all the vegetation, uneven ground and things you can't see.
I didn't find anything of interest, so I decided to take the footpath down to the beach. The bottom of the path leads out onto the estuary where many species of birds hang out. I started to make my way toward the beach. It was quite a long way and I didn't make it. I just kept thinking how far back it was to the bus and I had to go to the bathroom. It was hard to walk on the sand because it was so soft. I eventually turned back, made my way back to the path, uphill to the church, then another mile to the bus stop.
But, I decided to have some lunch at The Badger Inn, instead. It was a little past the regular lunch hour but the sign said they serve food all day, so I went in.
I found a table where I could see out a window. There was only one man sitting at the bar reading a newspaper and there were two women having a glass of wine in the corner of the room I chose to sit in. I could hear them whispering. I don't know what they were saying but I think they were talking about me.
The waitress never came to me so I asked the bartender if I needed to order at the bar. He said he'd come back to take my order and if he didn't then I could go to the bar to order. OK. Strange.
I ultimately had to go to the bar to place my order. I also ordered a diet coke which came in a tiny glass. I was going to have to make that last through my whole meal? Ugh! My food arrived and it was o.k. Nothing too special--prawn-stuffed chicken on top of a pile of spinach mashed pototoes with a cream sauce. Sounds good but was a bit bland. By this time I was the only one in the restaurant. It was eerie. No one came by to check on me. No one spoke to me. It was the most unwelcoming place I've ever been to. Very disappointing as I'm sure it's probably a fun place at night. They have a beer garden and live music.
After going to the bar to pay my bill (since no one came by to give me my check), I left and decided to go back to the B&B to rest. I looked everywhere for the bus stop and couldn't find it! I just kept walking and walking and walking until I was almost at the other end of Lelant! I finally found a bus stop and then had to wait another 15 or 20 minutes for a bus. I enjoyed the walk, but shouldn't have had to walk that far.
When I got back to the house, all the rooms downstairs were locked up. It hadn't been like that all week. It was really dead around here. I came up to my room and laid down for a quick nap. When I got up I was thirsty so hiked several blocks up the road to the grocery for a diet pepsi and hiked back.
I tried to update my blog but the internet wasn't working. Apparently the proprietors were out all day. Shortly after they got back, the internet was working again. It's nice to have working wi-fi!!
That's about the extent of my day. I hope tomorrow is more exciting. Don't know what I'll do during the day but Duncan & Jo and I are going to the Minack Theatre to see The Fishermans Friends, a Cornish singing group, tomorrow night.

Nancy Null my you are certainly getting your exercise in. I have always heard people from London dont like us and are not friendly. This was the first I had heard you say this. I am tired for you.
