Hi Everyone!
Not a whole lot to report for today. It was my last day in beautiful Cornwall and Jo offered to take me anywhere I wanted to go. One thing I came here to do was to visit the Cornwall Record Office in Truro. They keep all the BMD records, maps & church records for the various parishes in the county.
We drove into Truro but since parking is difficult, we parked at the Park & Ride facility and took a bus to a stop near the record office. Jo was checking the website on her phone & found we needed to make a reservation. So, she gave them a call and we were booked for the afternoon session starting at 1:00.
We had some time to kill and Jo was hungry so we walked to Sainsbury's which was on the way. It was a nice, big store--sort of like a Target or Super WalMart where you can buy groceries, clothing, housewares & the like (though I think Target & Super WalMart have more stuff). But, what was unique about this store was it had a parking garage (sort of). Imagine covered parking when shopping for groceries! There was a second level, too. And, there was an elevator. There was also an escalator up to the cafe. Of course, I had to take a couple of pictures.
From there, we walked a couple more blocks to the record office and waited in the foyer for entry while Jo ate a Sainsbury's sandwich. I wasn't hungry so I didn't get anything. They don't allow you to take many personal items in--just paper, a pencil, camera, laptop. No pens, no notebooks, no food/drink, purses, bags, etc... But there were lockers available.
We stayed until they kicked us out at 4:00. My main goal was to view the tithe maps of 1838 to see if I could find the homes where my ancestors lived. I got a little bit lucky.
While I didn't walk away with a lot of information, I can always order records. And, I'm pretty sure I'll come back some day. I at least have some more stuff to work with now.
From there, we walked back to the bus stop and were taken to the park & ride and made our way back to Carbis Bay. But, we decided to drive around looking for the houses, farms & land we had located on the maps.
It was nearly impossible to determine exactly which building the "rellies" lived in, but I was able to photograph the land they farmed, the mine they worked in and the farm where they worked. They had an incredible view! I wonder what that real estate would go for today?
I wanted to take Jo somewhere for her birthday, today, and she chose a restaurant nearby (Tyringham Arms) that was in an old converted school house. At first we thought our rellies had gone to school there until we realized it wasn't built until the latter part of the 19th century. But, it's possible an earlier school sat on that site.
The restaurant was having a "carvery" which is common over here. We both had roasted turkey and various veggies & sides. The staff was very friendly and the prices were reasonable.
After that, I needed to find an ATM so we went to Tesco so I could have some cash on hand to get me back to London tomorrow.
I will need to check out by 10:00 and have been spending the evening packing up. I will be very sad to leave this place. It's been a wonderful week!
I'm taking the train back to London and will be staying all night near Heathrow. I fly back home Sunday afternoon.
