#144 and 145 - Liefman and Keizer Karel (Belgium) - The WW1 tour continued today in the area of Flanders Fields. Today we saw where my grandfather was in the trenches in Ploegstreet and then when he had returned to Nieppe where he was billeted and he was hit by shelling on the town and ended up in hospital. Also drove down the street where he would have walked along to get to the trenches. Had lunch next to Ploegstreet. Also found out that dad's uncle was shoot in the knee. Close to where dad's dad was in the trenches was where the famous Christmas Truce happened, so we visited that aswell (apparently next year to commemorate 100 years the national soccer teams are going to play a charity match). After this we went to the Cobbers Memorial. Then we went to Pheasant Wood which was where the 100+ Australian soldiers were found and now have been given a proper cemetery and through DNA testing confirmed who they were. Then we saw Hill 60 and it's crater, the triage area of the Canadian doctor who wrote the poem about Flanders fields. Also saw Frommeles, Messines ridge and it's craters, and Tyne Cot (largest commonwealth cemetery with two Australian VC's). Then we went to Passchendaele, polygon wood and finished it off with last post at the Menin Gate. It has been a crazy past two days seeing these battlegrounds and memorials and it is close to unfathomable what our countrymen did for the world 99 years ago. What they gave up, and their courage despite what they faced. It is amazing. I guess that is what the ANZAC sprit is.
