#141, 142 and 143 - Maes, Loburg and Belzabuth (Belgium) - A sombre day today. On a WW1 tour with Dad and today focused on the trench line of the Somme area. First we went Villers Bretonneux (VB)....where there is a school which was supported to be re built by Victoria and they have a hall akin to one in Australia. They also have a museum and a sign in the play area which says "never forget Australia". Then we went to the memorial for the 1st Division of Australian Army and the Adelaide Cemetery. Then we went to Le Hamel and the crash site of the Red Baron (Shot down by an Aussie!!!). Then we saw 2nd and 3rd division memorials. Then we saw Poziers ridge, Moquet Farm, the Windmill and Gibraltor Block house where Anzac troops made their name. Then saw the massive crater created by allied mining and then use of explosive at La Boisulle. After all this we went to the Beaumont trenches where they are still very defined and it is crazy to see how close they were. In the area farmers still find 50 tonnes of left over ammunition each year. Also found out that with in the allied ranks there were also a Czech and Polish division. Also heard about Monash and his great strategy and mind before and after the war.
