Day 42
Magnetic Island - or as its known by the locals 'Maggie'. Our bus arrived into Townsville this morning at 5.30 am and the earliest ferry to Magnetic was 6.30 am, so although only an hour wait, we had not slept a wink all night so were desperate for a bed! We arrived at our hotel at around 7am (ferry only took about 15 mins), to find out we couldn't check in until 11am :( after nodding off a few times we eventually got into our room but decided to push through till the afternoon before having a nap! :) We are staying at Bungalow Bay Koala Village which is lovely, it has private and dorm bungalows. The complex itself is home to Koalas, Wallaby's and all sorts of other wildlife. The resort puts on a tour 3 times a day to see all the animals. We get to see the possums for free because they are in the kitchen every morning ;)
Day 43
Magnetic Island is a fairly small island but has a number of bays which are good for snorkeling. Bungalow Bay provides snorkeling equipment for everyone to use but also encourages you to wear a stinger suit, as it is stinger season. We decided to go and check out some of the reefs and walked for about 40 minutes to get to a place called Arthur Bay. We snorkeled for about an hour, it was great. Not quite crystal clear waters but good enough to see quite a few fish and plenty of coral. The bay was deserted and was the perfect place to do our first snorkel in Australia. The stinger suits also meant we didn't ruin our day by getting mega sun burnt so although we looked a bit silly it was an added bonus. (2 little yellow fish must have thought we were fairly attractive as they followed us the whole way through the reef ha, ha!)
