A sort trip up the coast to the fishing and holiday town of Lancelin. At last we find some nice surf at the back beach and spend a couple of hours there with our boogie boards. Fraser caught some waves body surfing and almost rode them all the way to the shore, We tried some Gingin lamb at the butcher shop which was very tasty.

A quiet day checking out the beaches in Ledge Point and having a swim in the pool. The coastline has numerous reefs which limit the waves and swimming opportunities for us, but we think there are a few good waves to the north which we’ll explore tomorrow. And it’s warming up again - perfect weather for Dad to go fishing.

After a number of showery days the weather is sunnier and we head back to the coast through Northam, Toodyay, Bindoon (nice bakery) and Gingin. We stop in Northam to do some shopping and schoolwork at the library. The grain silos in Northam have some great street art on them – a pity there isn’t more of this on dull industrial buildings. Although it’s still school holidays here the caravan park at Ledge Point is reasonably quiet.

Today we travelled along the Avon Valley to visit both York and Northam, two of WA’s oldest towns which are full of historic buildings. At Northam Fraser was pleased to see some mute swans of which only about 40 exist in the wild in Australia. Both towns have suspension bridges across the river – the one in Northam the longest in Australia and of course we had to bounce cross both of them. We left Perth and travelled east through York to a small town called Beverley, best known for it’s art deco architecture and aeronautical history – home to the WA Aeronautical Museum, Vampire jets and Australia’s third worst air crash. It was a quiet spot very different to what we had become used to during school holidays!
