Being on a budget, we opted for the 9 hour boat journey across to there. Which wasn't actually that bad. We were given dinner - supernoodles and rice, and watched Robbie Williams live at Knebworth. Only draw back were the 12ft waves that tipped the boat on its side the whole way there.
When we arrived in the Gilis it was pitch black, and because of the tide and current, we had to anchor out at sea and wait for a long boat to come and pick us up. Bit of a mission getting off onto it, especially when they tried to cart a 75yr woman onto it.
As there are no cars or bikes allowed on the island, the only form of transport is a horse and cart. We trekked to the back of the island where our little homestay was. A great find thanks to Ed and Sarah! Four little separate rooms with patio, huge double bed and breakfast incl. all for $8.
Spent a week here just chilling by the beach which was pretty lush. And the sea could be used as a lazy river because the current was so strong. Also found an awesome baguette shop with roast turkey, cranberry and stuffing. Not like home but a refreshing alternative to rice, rice or rice. Dinner was good too. Most places offered a bbq with kebabs, jackets and salad bar. And if you were board a few places had tv hut where you could catch a movie.
