This is my last week in Melbourne... I leave for Cairns on Saturday morning (very early, I think it's about 6 in the morning). I've survived the ICU department of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (although it wasn't very difficult considering they never gave me any work to do; all I had to do was get up at 6:30 in the morning and act like a zombie on the 3 hour ward round of comatose patients). It's actually quite boring when the patients don't talk to you...
The good thing about having nothing to do is that the doctors don't have anything to do either, and therefore have the time to tell us all the places in Australia, Victoria, and Melbourne to go to! I have a fair list of places to see on the East Coast and given that we now have an extra week to make our way to Sydney, I'm going to be able to see so many more of the places.
Eating out is cheap here... Sarah and I went for gourmet pizzas last night in a strange place called Il Bimbo on Brunswick Street (where all the cafes are) which cost $4 each! Mental! Also it hasn't rained here for the whole time we've been here (Australia is apparently in the middle of a major drought).
On a side thought, Sarah and I have managed to rack up a fair number of mini-disasters:
- I left my PADI diving card at home in Glasgow (thankfully Michael found it under my bed and text me the details from it!)
- I left my hoodie on the plane to Singapore
- I smashed my phone on the first night, resulting in me having to buy with arabic writing on the keys (temporary until I get back to Scotland)
- Sarah vomited throughout our journey to and from Kuala Lumpur (including the hostel in Singapore, all four terminals of Singapore airport, Kuala Lumpur airport, the Skytower in KL, on the streets of KL, and in the hostel) - thank god it wasn't on any of the plane journeys
- I left my newly acquired phone in the hostel in KL and had to get it taxied to the airport in another taxi, with an Malaysian taxi driver screaming in my ear, and Sarah trying not to be sick
- We rebooked earlier flights to Townsville and then suddenly realised there's no car hire places there and had to book a bus to Cairns!
- I've now misplaced my stethoscope in the hospital (I will find it before I go!)
- Sarah has lost her new Superdry hoodie
- I lost my lonely planet guide for East Coast Australia (but convinced the hostel to give me one from their massive stockpile!)
I think that's a suitable amount of disasters; Sarah says it's a small wonder I managed to survive in Africa myself for 5 weeks without losing a single thing. I even had my laptop with me whilst I was over there!!!
In any case, life is good in Australia. And at the expense of repeating myself, I shall consider moving here when I'm done with medicine...
