Waking up to pouring rain we set off on our little road trip. We left Adelaide through the Adelaide hills, which the van really loved. Slowly but surely we made it over them! We stopped for a little breakfast in a small town called Hahndorf, the oldest surviving Australian - German town. With very similar architecture, there was definitely a German feel to the town, and despite it being a bit 'disneyland-like', pulling in lots of (German) tourists, it was still very pretty.
We continued driving through the rain, heading south and having to stop in a very s***ty little town called Tailem-Bend. Seriously, I would not recommend this place to anybody who was travelling through South Australia. The place had a genuine depressing feel to it. Then again, it was grey, dull and pouring down, it might be nicer in the summer. Although, i doubt it.
We left sharpish and as we entered the Coorong peninsula the sun started to shine. It was good timing too because it looked beautiful. It was the first time we'd seen the sea in nearly 5 months, possibly the longest period of not seeing it in our lives. Strange.
We stopped for some chips midway along the 'coorong' at a tiny place called Salt Creek. Tiny in that it consisted of a hotel/pub/cafe/farm all in one building. We were going to camp there for the night but ended up not having the correct change for the national park fee. So we continued the coastal drive, going through Kingston SE, its highlight being a huge lobster named Larry. We tooke the obligatory photo and left.
We arrived just as it was getting dark in a trendy little beach town called Robe. We then drove about 15km on an unsealed road to find a free campsite, only to discover it was completely bogged (we did see a wombat though). We then had to manouver a 180degree turn on the small boggy road, nearly getting the van stuck. With our hearts racing a bit from wanting to get stuck there for the night, we made, I think, the wise decision of going to a caravan park.
Once settled there we had our cold baked beans out of the tin and bread for dinner, then climbed into the back of the van to sleep, our first day on the road to Melbourne over.
