Hey Kids,
We boarded the bus in BA for our 18 hour journey up to Puerto Iguazu, which is a small town in Northern Argentina, right on the border with Brazil and Paraguay and home to the second biggest waterfalls in the world.
We caught a taxi from the bus terminal to the hostel with a Dutch couple, Martijen and Chris who we ended up spending the next 3 days with. It was hilarious as Chris was the double of Rosser and Martijen looked a little like mad dog, they also had many things in common. After checking into the hostel (Hostel Inn} we went into town to get a few bits and bobs for dinner and just cooked in the hostel and had a few drinks with Martijen and Chris.
Satarday 20th JUNE, We arranged for a taxi to pick the 4 of us up in the morning as it turns out its cheaper than getting the bus and the taxi was our for the day, costing only about 10 quid! For those of you who don't know the Iguazu falls are a world class attraction in Argentina.Guarani legend has it that a god planned to marry a beautiful aborigine named "Naipi" who fled with her mortal lover Taroba in a canoe. In rage, the god sliced the river creating the waterfalls, condemning the lovers to eternal fall. The legend then says that Naipi was turned into a rock! What people will do for love.... Anyway so the waterfalls of the Iguazu River are located on the border of the Brazilian state of Parana and the Argentine province of Misiones. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu, which means you can view them from both the Brazilian and Argentina side. There are 275 waterfalls along 2.7 Kilometers (1.67 miles} and about 70 metres high...So big its difficult to comprehend unless you have been im sure. We decided that we would go to see the Brazilian side first. It took us about 45 mins to get to the falls in the taxi, we of course had to cross the border which was not a problem at all and was really quick. From the Brazil side you can see the whole falls from a distance, its crazy to see the size of them totally mindblowing. We spent a few hours walking round AWWWing and OOOWWWing in amazement. The power, size and sheer noise of the falls is out of the world, its like you can feel them pounding in your heart, the noise is incredable. We got up close to the Garganta del Diablo (Devils throat} which was frightening but a real adrenalin rush! As well as the falls there is a huge abundance of wildlife that live in the national park, including Pumas, thousands of birds some of which we encountered and of course the cheeky Raccoons...very cute, even Marc thought so.
After the falls we went back into Argentina to the supermarket to get some beer and food for the night as Holland were playing in the Euros. It was a pretty disappointing score especially as we had money on Holland winning...SORRY POP'S am due you for that bet!! It was a great night in the hostel as we had Asado for dinner, then a show was put on by the staff, some traditional dancers, music and lots of games to get everyone interacting with one another. Myself and this other Scottish girl Elizabeth got up showed the locals how you do some Scottish Dancing....
Sunday 21st Time to hit the Argentinean side of the Falls, with the day before being so amazing we never thought it could get any better. We caught the local bus from the hostel and paid about $10 us dollars to get into National Park. The sun was shining and we really could not believe our luck as it was so warm for the time of year. Since there had been lots of rain over the past week the falls were literally BURSTING!! Once into the park we boarded the train which took us to the Devils throat.....WOW WOW WOW it was amazing standing on a platform right above the waterfall which were raging after all the rain in the previous weeks. Marc and I were totally gob smacked, the falls kind of make you feel all giggly and very very happy. The Brazillian side was great for an overall view of the falls but the Argentinean side was even better as you get so close to the falls. There was lots of different walks to several parts of the falls all over the park, we spend hours walking round and still seen so many things that amazed us, also as you can see from our pics we took hundreds....I just couldn't help myself, I want to remember that day FOREVER!!
We also took a boat trip which was pretty scary, the boat got up as close as possible to the falls, we both got soaked but it was well worth it. My advise to anyone going would be, see both sides of the falls if you have time, but leave the Argentinean side on your second day.
Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and after spending 8 hours or so at the falls it was time to head back to the hostel. It was an emotional experience seeing the falls in real life, as its something Ive wanted to do for a very long time, the energies at Iguazu were overwhelming and the experience turned out to be better than I had ever wished for. As we said farewell, Marc and I both agree that the Iguazu Falls are definitely one of the main highlights of our trip yet.
That evening at about 9pm we checked out of the hostel and made our way to the bus station after having dinner with a few friends to catch our 27 hour bus to Salta....YES I said 27 hour bus journey!!!
Until next time Amigos,
Jamie and Marc xxxxx
