James and Ellie in Europe
Day 24:
We had a fairly uncomfortable night in the tent and we were up fairly early cos of bright and hot sunshine. The lovely hostel people made us a great brekkie and then told us that the water was to be switched off for 24 hours from that afternoon. Disaster!!! We decided to try and find a hotel for the night cos showers are a luxury that neither of us an do without especially after a day on the beach...
The staff do a daily minibus drop-off to the beach at 11am so we chilled out, went online while we could and then headed off to the sea :o)
Everyone there spoke about the A-Lounge as the place to be but when we got there it was just a bar with a couple of smallish swimming pools and lots of sun loungers and stuff: designed for people who are too posh to get sandy basically!!!! The uniform of the staff was a horrible lime-green too - not very relaxing to look at!!!
We got a couple of sun loungers and lazed back in the midday heat - we had a bit of a swim and James decided not to tell Ellie about the jellyfish that he had seen for fear of having to swim on his own!!!
A guy tried to sell us sea-shell necklaces for 50 lev (about 22 pound) and after we told him to go away he haggled with himself relentlessly while we enjoyed the sunshine before giving us one for 5 lev :o)
We found a nice hotel for not too expensive and got the bus back to the hostel to get our stuff - took ages to find the bus but we finally got back there ok. We really didn't want to leave the hostel but needs must....
We went out for dinner at a very popular place called BM and were surprised to be sharing a table!! But having looked round we realised that everyone had the same problems so it was kinda ok.
We chatted with the Danes we were sat with and they told us how horrible Varna was and how much they were looking forward to going home!!! we didn't know what to say so just nodded and got confused!!!! They got up and left and were quickly replaced by what can only be described as a Bulgarian mafioso and his trophy wife who smoked all over our food (ignoring our unsubtle coughing and splutterings). When we say "smoked" - she actually just lit them and let the smoke billow. Think she had seen Breakfast At Tiffanys one too many times!!! GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
We got back to hotel and were horrified to discover what damage midday sun can do if you forget the sun cream. we had good aftersun but we knew this was gonna sting for ages. James especially was pinker than the average hot lobster!!!! Next stop an afternoon train to Plovdiv and lots of aftersun!!!
