James and Ellie in Europe
Day 26:
Today we had the whole day to ourselves for one of the very occasions on this mad trip!! We made the most of it with a good lie-in before heading out in to town around 11am for breakfast. We bumped in to Chris again and the three of us searched in vain for somewhere that was open AND serving food at the same time. We found lots of "cafes" that didn't sell food; and lots of restaurants that didn't open until 12!! Having discounted McDonald's we settled for a little kiosk that sold dodgy looking pizza. The pizza was as good as it looked, soggy and cold to boot!! The hot sun helped warm it up a little but not nearly enough!!!
We were determined to take things slowly today and that was why we ended up back in bed shortly after our "breakfast" :o)
We snoozed for a couple of hours before hitting the town and looking at more shiny things!! We found a very cool present for Ellen (James' sister) and then checked out one of the nice looking restaurants that had been shut previously. The service was lousy, but the food was good so it was kinda worth the wait....
Ellie wasn't feeling too well so we headed back to the hostel again so Ellie could catch up on sleep and James busied himself with trying desperately to catch up on the Travel Journal!!
We left the hostel as the sun was well on it's way down, but still managed to get a great view of the Roman Amphitheatre (which was full and very much in use due to a local folk/culture festival) before scrambling to the top of the hill to watch the sun go down surrounded by more Roman ruins - a very beautiful moment; and hopefully the pictures from our crappy camera will do it some kind of justice!!
We got to a hillside restaurant just ahead of the crowds from the festival and were momentarily confused as we had to converse in French with our Bulgarian waitress!! We were so used to everyone either speaking English very well, not at all or speaking German, that it took a few seconds to adjust our brains in to Francais but it all turned out ok in the end!!!
Tomorrow is the longest day in the world - a 16 hour trip to Skopje, Macedonia!!!!
Good night!!
James and Ellie
