The God of Small Things
This town has been immortalised by one of my (and KB's) favourite books; 'The God of Small Things.' We were only here to catch a local ferry to Kottayam and then catch a local bus to Kochi-phew! We spent the night in Alleppey and the town isn't very interesting but our trip on the ferry was brilliant. It took us through the local backwaters where we passed smug looking tourists on their posh house boats gently floating along the water as we noisily chugged past. We dropped off and picked up people living in the middle of nowhere surviving as farmers on the dredged land. The only way of getting around is on these local ferries or if they are lucky enough to own their own boat. The way of life seems relaxed and easy going but farming here must be arduous. Kottayam wasn't interesting at all and we got the bus straight to Kochi. It was a bumpy ride and took a lot longer than we anticipated. Exhausted and hungry we got a tuk tuk to our hostel with a driver who also took longer than we anticipated. We are sure he has just started learning to drive as he is without a doubt the most cautious driver in India, not that we were complaining it was a refreshing change!
