Kiwi had given us some advice on where to stop along the way and one of them was just before Gisborne, or Gizzy where we had planned to stay for the night. We had a lovely picnic inside Monique because it was so windy, looked at the rock formations as we are good and Kiwi had told us too and then we went for a walk up a very steep hill to see Captain Cooks bay. It was his first sighting of New Zealand and I must say he had a pretty good view, I can see why he hung around. On our way to Gizzy we took a little detour that was supposed to bring us to a lake and according to the map was only 5km out of our way. We went up a gravel road for at least 15 minutes without the hint of any water, let alone a lake. Although we had some good views there was no lake to be seen… until we continued on the road we were on originally and found a beautiful spot with DOC camping. We weren't far from Gizzy and decided this was a great find so stayed for the night. We did another mini hike but went a bit off the beaten track and aimed ourselves directly upwards. The walk was pretty tough but the views made it worthwhile. The next day we stopped at some more walks, one of them was to a waterfall and we weren't expecting much but to our surprise it was a shaded scenic walk with a lovely waterfall at the end. We got to Gizzy and the clouds came over, it started to chuck it down so we didn't do much and we were pleased we had stopped along the way when the sun was out. The town looked nice and we were lucky enough to have good weather the following morning so I could buy some new flip flops and see the town with a bit more of a shine.
