The island of Hvar in the Adriatic sees more sunshine than anywhere else in Croatia say the Hvarians. It is also the island where those of wealth and fame come. Last night Elenka heard the band called The Killers performing on a rooftop patio. She came to our apartment all excited and we rushed back to the scene. Others were sitting, squinting upwards and listening, but I was leery. I couldn't detect any movement on the patio, couldn't see anyone sitting at the somewhat hidden tables. Nevertheless, we sat, listened and clapped like everyone else until the Killers came out with a perfect rendition of The Rolling Stones, Satisfaction. Too perfect were these killers - on the way back home I fed Elenka a couple of forkfuls of crow. She said that at least she'd gotten me out of the apartment.
The old part of Hvar Town, although not as large, is a little nicer than Split's Old Town, in my opinion. That's because it isn't filled with people making noise day and night. The building of the Town Fortress began in 1282 when Hvar was under Venetian rule and wasn't completed until 1551. From the Fortress, a twenty-five minute uphill hike, the town and sea look quite magical. And although you'll not see it in the photos, the Hvarians have found a clever way of disguising the town's architecture. The new houses that surround the Old Town have been built in the same style and colour as the original ones.
Faux Killers included, we've not seen any famous people on Hvar Island. The Croatians are all still very friendly and I'm beginning to think I was given a bum steer about their nastiness all those years ago.
Today we swim in the crystal clear Adriatic.

Majka Great pictures! We´ve never been on Hvar and we only saw it from a ferry. Looks like it´s worth stopping by.
