Today we arrived in Chennai at approximately seven thirty am and promptly headed for breakfast in a local cafe. Steven was made up as they served masala dosa which he has absolutely fallen in love with. They are a large rice paste pancake that is filled with spicy potato and accompanied with various chutneys and sauces. I was starving and had one two along with the strangest tea. We then headed for the two hour drive to Mamallapuram which is a small seaside town and the place me and Vanessa had been waiting all week for. It's a small town and a world heritage site due to is extensive temples and sculptures. It's a very laid back place and has a very bohemian hippy feel about it. Our hotel "Hotel Mamalla Heritage" was situated central to the town and only a few mins from the beach. On the way to the beach is numerous brightly coloured hotels, shops and cafes.
We arrived at approximately ten thirty and were desperate to get to the pool but as our rooms weren't ready we couldn't get beach ready so sat by the pool in our shorts until eleven thirty when our room was finally ready. A quick shower and shave later and me, Vanessa and Pattie were at the pool sunning ourselves while Steven sat in the shadows doing admin. After an hour or so we decided to head to the beach for lunch and met up with Rhys and Cliodna and headed in the direction of the beach. We stopped at the Santana restaurant which is right on the beach and has a roof top terrace and had some seafood... Me the calamari and Steven the vegtable noodles. I couldn't wait any longer and ran down to the sea while Steven enjoyed a beer upstairs. The beach was quite busy and people always try and sell you stuff but I was too busy wading in to the sea to barter. The waves are awesome here but the sea is fierce and you can easily get swept away so I wasn't going too deep. After a while Steven came to join us so along with Vanessa we headed in further trying to ride the waves and mainly stay a float.... It was such good fun and in the process I lost my bracelet and my sunnies, it was hilarious though watching Vanessa trying to get out of the sea to just be pulled back in by a rebel wave.
After we had thoroughly tired ourselves out and swallowed half of the bay of Bengal we headed back up to the hotel for a shower before dinner. Ravi wanted o take us somewhere really special tonight so we made the extra effort and really dressed up... Well as much as we could with our capsule wardrobe. We then walked off to a very classy place on the outskirts of town. The place was unreal and wouldn't have looked out of place in Los Angeles. It was a fixed priced meal of five hundred and fifty rupees a head and it was nice to dress up and go for a posh meal. We headed in past the Christmas tree in the lobby to a dining room where everything was minimalistic and white. We ordered lime sodas and awaited our meal... The started consisted of pakoras, an Asian salad and a beautifully tandoori fish which was delicious. The starter was so tasty that we couldn't wait for the main. The main meal was a fragrant vegetable rice, along with a spicy chicken curry, a sweet paneer curry and a lentil curry... On the side were butter naans. They were beautifully presented but I could read both Steven and Vanessa's mind when the food arrived thinking "is that it". Vanessa makes Steven look like an anorexic... I've never seen a girl eat so much! After we finished the main.... Steven also finishing Manya's, we then had pudding. This was delicious... A sweet carrot desert which strangely tasted a lot like rice pudding and an ice cream flavoured drink.... Followed by coffee. It was a very nice meal and we were all stuffed after, including Steven and Vanessa.
We walked back to the hotel and headed to our rooms... Up early for a bike ride tomorrow and we were both shattered. Think I fell asleep to air crash investigation in Hindi or something equally random.
