As usual the two other unsociable lads in our dorm had not woken up yet so we had to sneak around to gather our stuff and pack quietly. We moved our stuff into the common area and began the sort out ready for our flight to Cambodia later this afternoon. Luckily the others did eventually rise which sped up the process of our packing significantly. We decided to head down to grab some breakfast and all the other late risers were down there. Laura had explained to our grumpy roommate that the toasters were in use and instead of obviously realising that Laura was next in line he just jumped ahead which Was just lovely and very gentlemanly. Eventually we got to the toaster and then enjoyed some jam on toast with a nice cup of coffee. After we had eaten and felt satisfied from the breakfast it was time to say our goodbyes and headed to the bus station.
Bags in tow we headed to the bus stop and luckily grabbed the last two seats on the bus, we then enjoyed the scenery of the one hour bus ride to the airport. Air asia, based in Kuala Lumpur has its own terminal and it is as big as some in Britain which which is pretty crazy. The organisation at the check in desks was something left to desired but we managed to find the queue for Cambodia which shortened quickly. To our relief our bags were easily under weight so we took our tickets and headed for the departure lounge. To use up the last bit of our money we bought some sandwiches and baked goods including a cream bun which was amazing! We had a wait about an hour for them to board us which was another interesting affair. You practically had to walk outside to your plane and you could easily go the wrong way and probably end up on the wrong plane but luckily we didn't.
The flight took about 75 minutes and went very fast, as we were descending Cambodia strangely looked like England which was weird. You literally felt like you were landing at Gatwick with green fields and small hamlets. This made us a little homesick and soon enough forgotten as we were herded off the plane to immigration. The visa process was fairly painless and we managed to haggle our tuk tuk driver down to a reasonable price who took us to our hotel. The roads of Phnom Penh reminded us of India with the craziness and the scattered litter everywhere and this actually felt rather pleasant. Laura instantly had a good feeling about the place and we were met by some very friendly men at the hotel. After we had climbed the calf burning stairs, our room was how could I put it..... basic. It had orange stained walls with satin sheets on the bed.... at least we had a working fan haha! There was a small window in the bathroom and a very bright hello kitty duvet on the bed... duvet? in cambodian heat? crazy. By now we had got used to basic rooms and it did not bother us at all. As long as it has a bed and a shower we are happy. We decided early on to head into the night life of Phnom Penh with the owner warning us of bag snatching in the area.... I would bear that in mind.
We walked down to the riverside which was the obvious tourist area and it surprised us on the seediness factor. A lot of the bars had scantly clad women outside which was worse than in Bangkok. We eventually found a normal looking bar which had beer for 40p..... this was more like it!! We sat and enjoyed a couple with Laura breaking off her abstinence from alcohol, though this was because the beer is half the price of soda. After a couple of cool beers her guilt wore off as an American sounding chap starting talking to us from the table across. We learnt his name was Frank and he was working as military auditor in Afghanistan. He was on holiday but his wife didn't fancy it so she went to Thailand! He was very much a Deep South American but was quite funny and he learnt a lot about the Afghanistan war as you could imagine. He bought us our drinks which was very kind and we decided to head for some food.
We ate on a street stall near Frank's hotel and had a delicious noodle soup. At the same time frank kindly gave me a bank note from the UAE as he knew I was collecting money. Afterwards, we decided to head back to our usual haunt and get a couple more cheap beers in. After a few minutes a familiar looking face crossed the street. Laura recognised instantly it was Sian from Koh Lanta, proving once more how small the travelling world is! We all caught up and Sian explained how her camera was stolen on a bus which must of been a nightmare and shows how mindful you have to be of your belongings at all times. At this point Frank bid us farewell but did not pay for his expensive water he had so left me with the bill haha....... brilliant! We were drinking casually and chatting and realised that it had passed midnight and we all agreed bed was the only option. After the water and obligatory noodle run from the shop Laura and I dreaded our sauna room but agreed to meet Sian tomorrow for a trip to S-21 prison which would defiantly be an experience. Eventually we fell in to a very restless sleep about two am.
