Back in Antigua to chill for a couple of days then of to Copan in Honduras. Volcano was spewing out lots of smoke last night. Still not seen lava though.

Got the night bus from Flores down to Guatemala city. It saved a night's board but didn't get masses of sleep. Susanne slept like a log mind. We had an interesting encounter at the coach stop before the bus arrived. A man pulled up in a car and asked if we were going to Guatemala city then on to Antigua. We said yes. So, today entailed an early start, 04.00 to go to Tikal for sunrise. A Mayan City, whose roots lie far back in time to 700bc when the Mayans settled here. Its power waxed and wained until around 900ad when it was eventually abandoned. At its peak it sprawled over 30sq km and was home to a suspected 100,000 people. 90% of the city still lies under the reclaiming jungle but we were shown around the major monuments. So after a noisy new years eve which we largely ignored, going to bed at nine and getting up for fireworks, we set off at 0800 to head for Semuc Champey by shuttle. The journey was a long 8 hours cramped into a small mini bus. Stopped for some lunch half way (a nice veggy platter, rice and beans) and one other time for a loo break. The sky slowly clouded and it started to rain. After 7 hours we swapped to a large 4x4 vehicle for an hours drive through the mount...

Last night the loudest fireworks ever were going of through the night. Or at least we are telling ourself it was fireworks as it sounded just like the artillery practise on military grounds back home. This morning A volcano keeps puffing out the odd wisp of smoke. Trying to decide if I want a bigger eruption to occur or not?
