The dunes are incredible, everything we had hoped for and were sampled in style on a quad biking tour. The two of us set out with our guide and were soon testing our nerves over sandy little hills. Soon we were hurtling along, faced with wall upon wall of huge sand dunesand my brain was telling me there was no way we were going to get over these things. Fingers and toes crossed with my thumb firmly on the accelerator there was nothing to do but go for it and just hope for the best. Soon if felt as though we were driving vertically and it was simply a case of holding your nerve for as long as possible, before turning pretty sharpish and speeding back down again. Having reached nerve breaking point and successfully turning we were then faced with the downhill, I'm not ashamed to say I spent much of the trip yelling 'oh sh*t, oh sh*t, oh sh*t into the abyss.
After an hour or so we stopped at the top of a pretty big dune and James and our guide took a few turns sandboarding down the slope to warm up. It's rather bizarre being in the middle of the desert and absolutely chilled to the bone. After 2 hours it was time to head back after watching the sun begin to set over the sea from the top of yet another dune.
Swakopmund is an odd little place, very German, quiet in low season and extremely chilly in winter! Well situated on the tourist trail it's a popular German holiday destination you could easily forget you are in Africa. We've imbibed more glorious food and met up with two couples we met separately in Livingstone, Zambia and it's been great to see some familiar faces.
Namibia is rather hard to navigate without your own transport so we've decided to cut our time here short by a few days and head on down to South Africa. A glorious 22 hour bus journey awaits from Windhoek to Cape Town but never fear this will be on a wonderful sleep liner with almost fully reclining seats, oh how we have gone up in the world.
