There's been much ado about nothing in the Petersham crib over the past few days. It's mostly been:
Job-seeker job-seeker jobseeker man,
Find me a job as fast as you can,
Make it well paid and with free toast and jam,
Oh find me employment oh job-seeker man.
I've been to a couple of interviews for recruitment agencies and Howie has had a call from a lady to tell him the jobs he's applied for are beneath him. Which is very complimentary but not neccessarily productive for lining the pockets with gold. In essence, finding a job in Sydney is like trying to find meaning in a Sylvester Stallone movie. Fruitless.
We went to the centre yesterday as it was beautifully hot weather. After three attempts to avoid the rain in previous days, we finally got into the botanic gardens to see the resident bat colony. Bats the size of eagles flit from branch to branch and spend all day hanging, twirling around and covering their faces from the sunlight with their wings. The squabblling that goes on is a blatant give away to where they are, and they screech and fly around all day. It's really amazing to see and they are also extremely cute.
We were walking up to the visitor centre in the gardens, when something fell from an enormous palm tree. We didn't see what it was, but it made an almighty 'thud' when it hit the ground. We assumed it to be a coconut or branch; as it turns out, it was a huge possum. He had obviously fallen asleep in the tree and let go of the branch; he laid a little stunned at the bottom of the tree, then glanced around to check that nobody saw him and scurried back up the tree into the leaves. Such a pity we didn't get a photo.
Back to the work situation, we've made a rather big decision. Although we had planned to hole up in Sydney for 6 months and live the good life, we didn't realise how expensive it was going to be. $2.50 for a Boost?! Madness!
So, we've decided to move to Adelaide, which is infinitely cheaper. Hopefully we'll still manage to find work (we're not exactly turning down offers here anyway) but the cost of living is less than 50% of what it is in Sydney.
Anyway, all things going to plan, we'll be in Adelaide this time in two weeks. It means we've got lots to see and do in NSW before we go, but we're getting quite excited about going on an adventure to somewhere else and getting to know a different city really well.
Let's just hope that there are base-jumping possums in South Australia as well.

Emma love the story about the possum! Adelaide sounds like a good plan and no doubt will be another big adventure. Look forward to hearing about it.
