I'm sitting in Kuala Lumpur airport in Starbuck's, about to board my flight to London.
Travelling alone does have it's advantages (I got to the airport very early, checked in, and intend to be at the gate atleast an hour before my flight departs), but in general I would have to say that travelling with Howie is much more fun. Having been travelling alone for over 24 hours now, certain experiences have crossed my path that never would have done had Howie been here. For example, I got to my hotel last night, checked in to my room, ordered my wake up call, etc, and asked for an electricity adaptor at reception. It was only when I got back to the room that I realised that Malaysia uses UK plug sockets (doh!) and so when the nice man arrived to help me with plugging my computer in I felt a bit silly. He left - probably to meet up with the other staff for a good laugh at the English girl in room 711 - and then I realised that none of the sockets in my room actually worked. I spent about half an hour plugging different things in different plugs, switching lamps on and off, trying to work out why the fridge was on but nothing else was, and was about to call the nice man back again. It was only as I was halfway to reception that I realised I hadn't put my key card in the switch by the door, and that when I did so, all the electricity would come on. Howie would have worked it out in a trice.
So I got to watch the Disney Channel and When Harry Met Sally without Howie flicking through the channels to look at the different football scores, but I would trade that off for having someone to eat with at dinnertime. I recieved some quizzical - and occasionally pitying - looks from my fellow diners when I went in to the resturant alone (accompanied only by Jane Austen) and had a pizza. For one. Alone. On a big table for four. The waiters kept asking me if I was ok and laughing at me.
Night time was no easier, with a very large bed that got very confusing in the drowsiness of sleep with nobody else in it to use for navigational purposes. I kept waking up hearing people dragging suitcases along the corridor and thought it was a plane about to crash into the hotel (which is very silly, of course, and Howie would have told me I was being silly, but alone in a large room in a large bed it was terrifying and confusing).
Breakfast was had alone this morning, of course, and it was quite sad that Howie wasn't there to really get our money's worth out of the food. It was a buffet breakfast and Howie would have gone up for sevenths.
Nevetheless, I am at the airport now, about to fly back to Blighty.
May the plane be swift (may it's wings stay attached), may the seat next to me be empty, and may Harry Potter 7 be on the inflight entertainment system.
Next stop: London.
