Well it was the last day today so expectations were high and everyone was looking forward to reaching the finish line.
Another 07.30 start and on the bus for a 2 hours to our bikes but not before stopping at a place called Spean Preah Toeus to look at a bridge that was built in 1181 and has stood the test of time, very impressive. While we were there a wedding party arrived, bride, groom, bridesmaids and ushers hoping to have a lovely photo session on a landmark tourist attraction, but alas all they found was a bunch of people in Lycra wanting to have their pictures taken with the wedding party, oh dear, guessed they picked the wrong day to get married, not a good start.
From there we then continued on to a temple to pick up our bikes and were off on our final days cycling. Today we had a mix of road riding and the back and beyond, for all of us the back and beyond was the preferred option for us because as previous days have taught us road riding is bloody hard, bloody hot and the bloody A's, B's and C's come out to play again.
The back and beyond did not disappoint, on dirt tracks that can only be described as, well dirt tracks, with a red dust which literally got into every crevice and left everyone covered and looking like the love child of David Dickinson.
With a stop for lunch, back on the road and some very interesting photo opportunities we finally came to our final 10Km whereby somebody shouted out "let's all cycle together for the final 10Km, this lasted all of 3.2 seconds when the A's were off like bats out of hell, if I have said it once I have said it a 100 times during this journey, there is no I in team except here, only joking I love them all. So 10Km, 8Km, 6Km and then we stop at 3Km for a final water stop and a quick chat from our guide with regards to where we will stop and finally we are off as one unit, all together, A's, B's and C's in perfect harmony for the first time in 7 days, site to behold for those of you that get off on Lycra clad David Dickinson lookalikes.
We cycle round the moat and then finally it appears to the right, Angkor Wat Temple, our final destination, what the last 7 days has led us to and then, we cycle right past it because they don't allow a finishing line to be at the entrance to the temple and apparently you can get into lots and lots of trouble. So we cycle another few hundred yards where our support crew have put up a finish line and it is a good feeling, a very good feeling indeed and everyone is extremely proud of themselves.
So this is my final blog and all it leaves me to say on behalf of everyone who participated in this challenge is a very big thank you to all of our families for their fantastic support leading up to an during this challenge. A big thank you to everyone who sponsored us for this very worthy charity. Thank you to James the Charity Challenge representative who along with the Vietnamese and Cambodian guides have been with us every step of the way. The Save the Children guys for their enthusiasm and undying commitment to this very fine charity and finally to me for painstakingly doing this bloody blog every evening at dinner and being accused of being as much fun as a fart in a space suit.
So it just leaves me to say VIETNAM TO ANGKOR WAT - DONE!!!
