Had a crappy night last night. Gasthof was right next to Ulm cathedral which rang it's very loud bells every quarter of an hour. That and the fact that there was too much light coming in through the curtains. So I was up at 6.30 and pottered around till breakfast at 7. Helgar was much more amiable this morning but i wasn't going to take any chances so I waited for her to leave the office before i snuck out a sandwich.
An Internet connection here is very hard to come across so I had take note of a coffee place with free wifi last night on my walkabout. So with cappuccino in hand I sat down an connected for the first time in three days, quite a record for me, I was beginning to break out in cold sweats. So after connecting with the world I packed up my things, tried my best to clean off my bike including the mangled slug that had wrapped itself around my bike and got on my way. Into Bavaria I crossed with Donauwörth as my destination, another 100km.
It wasn't raining which was a bonus so I made good progress in the first hour, I say the first hour because when I reached Elchingen I was faced with the problem of the bike route being closed. The storm that had fallen over the weekend had totally destroyed the area. Honestly it looked like a tornado had ripped through as there were trees strewn everywhere, corn fields flattened and roofs blown off. This meant that I had to go along the road, which even though was smoother, was even longer in places. This problem continued for almost the next 20km, they were doing their best to clean everything up but I guess they couldn't do it quick enough. There were a few of us we were trying to work out the best route and we helped each other out, me in best German and them in their best English.
I passed through some really beautiful cities today, Laufingen and Dillingen. Neither got enough of my attention nor did I stop to take any photos. I'm having to go non-stop if I am to reach my destination in good time, I'll just have find images on the Internet when I return. My right knee and coccyx are beginning to play up a bit which I guess is normal. The most painful thing was when a bit of stinging nettle flew up into my eye, thought I was going to lose my eye! Damn stupid was that I repeated the whole painful experience when taking a shower only to have the same piece of nettle go back into my eye!
Anyway, I made good time into Donauwörth, time to find myself a bed and walk around the shops. Another beautiful German town. I just love the buildings here. Had a plate of pasta and then decided to rest as tomorrow I need to make it to Kelheim.
